Tsonga Tribe and Fabric: Collection 2014

The Tsonga people (also called Shangaan) are a Bantu ethnic group of Southern Africa inhabiting the southern coastal region in: Mozambique, Zimbabwe, Swaziland, and provinces of South Africa. The Tsonga traditional economy is based on mixed agriculture and pastoralism. Early Portuguese documents of shipwreck sailors indicate that Tsonga Communities were already based between Maputo and Saint Lucia Bay by 1550.

Tsonga fabric is layered with different materials to make women hips look larger when dancing. It is distinctly brightly coloured and patterned. The Tsonga dance is a way of expressing  cultural pride in rituals. In current times, customary garments are worn for any occasion including church, wedding and funeral processions.
